Our Saturday Tour of Victoria TX
A.... OLD NAZARETH ACADEMY
Designed by Jules C. Leffland and constructed in 1904, this fanciful Alsatian structure is one of the city's most important architectural landmarks. It was built to house the convent school of the Sisters of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament, a French order. Sisters from the Lyons order came to Texas in 1852 and to Victoria in 1866. NR-1986.
105 W Church St Victoria, TX 77901
B.... 1892 VICTORIA COUNTY COURTHOUSE
This Romanesque Revival structure was designed by noted Texas architect J. Riely Gordon, who enjoyed national fame. The limestone structure, completed in ten months during the calendar year 1892, replaced an earlier courthouse erected in 1849. Public sentiment saved the present building from demolition in the 1960s. A modern courthouse was constructed on its north side in 1967. The 1892 Courthouse, voted one of the ten favorite historic courthouses in Texas, was restored and re-dedicated in 2001 at a cost of $5.6 million. NR-1977; RTHL-1961.

C... LIBERTY COFFEE HAUS IN HAUSCHILD'S CIGAR FACTORY
Located in the 100 year-old Hauschild Cigar Factory in historic downtown Victoria. Aromatic fresh brewed coffee and popular espresso drinks contain locally roasted beans and Monin premium syrups.
About the Hauschild's Cigar Factory Building
This attractive brick structure replaced its frame predecessor in 1914. It was designed for George H. Hauschild, son of the builder of the opera house. The builder was local contractor Eugene Tuttle. Since the end of the cigar days, the building has served many different occupants, including architects and lawyers. NR-1986.

D... BROWNSON SCHOOL
Built on land donated by the widow of banker John M. Brownson (1836-1906) in 1910, this nicely detailed building cost a mere $12,000 to construct. It is referred to in school board minutes as being a "free public school." It was occupied on January 20, 1911 by grades one, two, and three. A bronze plaque memorializing Brownson was cast by noted sculptor Pompeo Coppini and hangs over the main entrance. NR-1986.
